Fjäderholm Islands (Fjäderholmarna) are the nearest islands in Stockholm’s archipelago. From the harbor Nybrokajen, which is easily accessible in central Stockholm, a 30 minute boat ride will take you right to the Fjäderholm Islands. Although the place is called the Fjäderholm Islands, and there are four islands in total, the ferries will take you to the largest of the islands, and that is where all the attractions are located.
Here you can explore nature with its walking trails and overlook the archipelago from the hills on the island. There are several restaurants and cafés serving both traditional Swedish cuisine and seafood. This is also a great place for swimming in the archipelago and there is a sandy beach as well as rocky beaches. You can also visit the local artisans’ shops that sell handmade crafts. You can see how glassblowers create creations from glass, as well as silversmith creations, where you can also make your own silver jewelry.
There are three boat companies that will take you from a central harbor in Stockholm to the Fjäderholm Islands: Strömma, Fjäderholmslinjen and Waxholmsbolaget. Strömma departs from the quay Nybrokajen, in front of Hotel Diplomat, in the district Östermalm. Fjäderholmslinjen departs from the quay Stadsgårdskajen between Slussen and the Old Town (Gamla stan), in the district Södermalm. Waxholmsbolaget departs from the quay Strömkajen, in front of Grand Hôtel, in the district Norrmalm. At the Fjäderholms Islands both Strömma and Fjäderholmslinjen will let you off at the dock Fjäderholmsbryggan, which is the dock on the north of the island. Here you will get off right at the area with the restaurants and shops. If you choose to go with Waxholmsbolaget they will drop you off at the dock Ångbåtsbryggan, which is the south dock. This dock is close to a beach and the street with the local craftsmen. The island is really not that large so you can easily walk from the south to the north side in a matter of minutes.
You can easily walk around the whole island in less than an hour. This is a good option for a day trip from Stockholm, since you can explore the whole island and it is close to the city.
