Mr Cake is a café and confectionery that is a quite popular spot among both locals and tourists. They have a large selection of mostly American-inspired pastries, but you’ll also find Swedish classics like the Semla pastry. (Note that Semla is commonly served around February – not full year – if following tradition).
They also offer sandwiches and salads, but the main reason to visit Mr Cake are their desserts for sure.
The founder – Mr Cake himself – Roy Fares, is an award-winning pastry chef, who’s worked at the renowned Tössebageriet before he started up his own place. He also happens to be cousins with two notable personalities in the Swedish film scene, Josef Fares and Fares Fares.
Fares has also released a couple of bakery books and appeared on Swedish television, adding a bit of celebrity touch to the café.
While the place is large, it’s also popular. On weekends expect it to be rather crowded and lively. This is by no means negative, the atmosphere is energetically happy and friendly, but don’t expect a quiet and cozy get away type of place when there’s a lot of people.
During popular hours you will probably find a queue starting at the entrance. Note that the queue splits after the staircase (just a few steps after the entrance) into a line for take-away to the left – which is a good option if you don’t want to wait for a seat. If you want to eat at a seating area, continue straight ahead when the queue splits.
Admittedly, the prices are on the higher side, but we find that the quality of the food and the overall experience more than justifies the cost. Also the staff is friendly and attentive; cleaning up tables fast when somebody leaves, and making an effort to ensure everyone finds a seat when the place is crowded.
