Stiernan Ramen

A Japanese ramen restaurant in the old town

The ramen restaurant Stiernan Ramen is really a hidden gem in the middle of the historic old town (Gamla stan), in Stockholm.

The interior of the restaurant goes hand in hand with its simplicity in their menu. They simply serve one dish – ramen with chicken broth in three different flavors, shoyu, miso, and shio. All ramen has the same toppings: Japanese braised pork belly, bamboo shots, marinated egg, and noodles topped with chopped spring onions.

The restaurant is located in the middle of the old town. On the street Österlånggatan, which is a bit quieter than Västerlånggatan. They only have about 11 seats in the restaurants, and last time we visited them there was already a line outside waiting to be seated. The line was pretty fast and we got a table after approximately 20 minutes. Once we were approaching the head of the line the staff came out and explained the menu. You can choose from three different broth flavors and if you want any extras. The different broth options are the classical shoyu broth, a soya based broth and also the most mild flavored broth. The miso broth has some more flavor and is a bit spicy. And finally the shio broth, which is lighter and has a salty flavor.

Stiernan is a perfect place to stop for a relaxing lunch break or some afternoon food. As the restaurant only has a limited number of seats it keeps a relaxing atmosphere and you can enjoy some time either by the kitchen counter or by the window seats overlooking the street outside.

The ramen were well prepared and we liked the simplicity of the menu and the interior. We went with the miso broth, which had a nice spicy taste to it. We spent about an hour here, which is just enough time to eat, relax and be ready to step out into the lively old town again.
