Stockholm airports

Stockholm is served by four airports, with Arlanda Airport being the largest and busiest, handling the majority of air traffic to and from the city.

Arlanda (ARN)

Stockholm’s main international airport is Arlanda airport, located approximately 37 kilometers (23 miles) north of the city center.

Terminals and Sky City

The airport features four terminals: Terminals 2, 3, 4, and 5. Interestingly, there is no Terminal 1, a result of historical changes in the airport’s layout and naming conventions.

At the heart of the airport’s terminal complex lies Sky City, a central hub connecting Terminal 4 and the international Terminal 5. Sky City houses the Radisson Blu SkyCity Hotel and Clarion Hotel Arlanda Airport, along with various shops, restaurants, and currency exchange services. The area is notable for its large windows, offering excellent views of the aircraft activity around Terminals 4 and 5.

Airport lounges

The best lounges at Arlanda Airport are the American Express Lounge by Pontus Frithiof and the SAS Lounge, both located in Terminal 5.

American Express Lounge

Ideal for breakfast, lunch, or dinner, this lounge offers excellent food options but has a setup primarily designed for dining, with fewer couches and sofas for relaxing. Access is limited to Centurion and Platinum American Express cardholders.

SAS Lounge

Designed for relaxation, this lounge features more couches alongside food and drink options. It is accessible to SAS Plus and SAS Business travelers, EuroBonus Diamond and Gold members, or SkyTeam Elite Plus members.

Pearl Lounges

For those without access to these premium lounges, each terminal also has a Pearl Lounge, which can be accessed with a Priority Pass membership. While not as well-equipped as the Amex or SAS lounges, the Pearl Lounges still provide a comfortable space to rest during longer waits.

Transportation to Stockholm

For transportation, Arlanda airport provides a range of options to reach Stockholm’s city center. The Arlanda Express train offers the fastest connection, taking only 18 minutes to reach Stockholm Central Station. Other public transportation options include buses and regular train services.

Stockholm Skavsta Airport (NYO)

Located approximately 100 kilometers (62 miles) south of central Stockholm, Skavsta Airport primarily caters to low-cost airlines, making it a popular choice for budget-conscious international travelers. Since Ryainair has moved to Arlanda Airport it is now mainly Norwegian and Wizz Air that operates from Skavsta Airport.

Reaching Skavsta from Stockholm typically requires around 90 minutes by bus, offering a convenient but longer travel option compared to other airports in the region.

Stockholm Västerås Airport (VST)

Located approximately 100 kilometers (62 miles) southwest of Stockholm, Västerås Airport primarily serves low-cost carriers, offering fewer flight options compared to Arlanda. Similar to Skavsta, traveling to central Stockholm from Västerås involves a longer journey, making it a less convenient choice for those seeking quick access to the city.

The journey from Västerås Airport to Stockholm Central Station takes about 80 minutes by airport coach. Alternatively, you can take local bus 3 to Västerås Central Station and then continue to Stockholm by train, which takes approximately 60 minutes.

Stockholm Bromma Airport (BMA)

Bromma Airport is the closest airport to central Stockholm and once a key hub for domestic and international flights, is currently mostly operated for domestic flights. As for now the plan is to develop a residential area at this location, and the airport is set to stop its operations by year 2038. Though it is unlikely for international travellers to arrive at this airport, if you do arrive here the distance to Stockholm Central is only about 17 minutes by taxi or 28 minutes by public transport.
