Currently closed / significant disruption

Centralbadet

CLOSED: Renovation of the spa (March 2026–turn of the year 2026/27, preliminary)

Centralbadet spa is temporarily closed for an extensive renovation. The whole spa is closed during the renovation period, where the whole property will be renovated. The aim is to improve the overall experience, while preserving the spa’s historic atmosphere. According to Centralbadet, the renovation is preliminarily expected to run until the turn of the year.

Read about the details on Centralbadet’s website.

Stockholm City Library (Stockholms stadsbibliotek)

CLOSED: The city library is closed for renovation (summer 2024–spring 2028)

Stockholm Public Library building
The iconic City Library, closed and can only be viewed from outside. It’s currently undergoing a major renovation, planned to reopen again 100 years after its initial opening, this time in spring 2028.

The landmark library at Odenplan is closed for a full renovation. The project upgrades building systems to modern standards and restores the facade to its original look. The renovated exterior will have a more neutral color than the currently orange building. Reopening is planned for spring 2028.

Söderhallarna

REOPENING 23 OCTOBER: Food hall closed for renovation (spring 2024–23 October 2026)

The food hall Söderhallarna, at Medborgarplatsen, has been closed for a full upgrade that modernizes the venue and adds a food hall with restaurants and bars, plus an adjacent cinema. It reopens on Friday 23 October 2026, starting with the food hall and several restaurants, with more places opening through the autumn.

Götgatan street

Renovation of Stockholm’s oldest metro tunnel (autumn 2025–2032)

Stockholm’s Green metro line runs through a tunnel under Götgatan on Södermalm that dates back to 1933. The waterproofing of the tunnel now needs replacing, and to reach it, workers have to open up the street above from ground level. The renovation covers the section between Medborgarplatsen and Skanstull and is divided into eight stages, running through to 2032.

The metro itself is not affected, the Green line runs as normal throughout the entire project. Above ground is a different story. During the first two stages, Götgatan is completely closed to motor traffic between Folkungagatan and Åsögatan. Later stages will involve single-direction restrictions further south. Several bus lines that normally run along Götgatan are rerouted during each stage. Pedestrians and cyclists can pass throughout, but space is tight and the street is noticeably disrupted.

If you are taking a taxi or travelling by car, avoid Götgatan between Medborgarplatsen and Skanstull and plan an alternative route through parallel streets such as Östgötagatan. After each stage is completed, the street is restored before the next section begins.

The Royal Opera (Kungliga Operan)

CLOSING SOON: Renovation of the Royal Opera House (2027–2032)

Stockholm Opera entrance
The Royal Opera House is planned for a major renovation during several years. From 2027 the shows will temporarily move to a new venue in Norra Djurgårdsstaden, until the reopening in 2032.

Stockholm’s Royal Opera will undergo a full renovation. Performances will relocate to a new venue in Norra Djurgårdsstaden for the duration of the project.

Open but with works nearby

Fatbursparken

Park redesign (planned to start in 2026)

Stockholm plans to redesign Fatbursparken in Södermalm. Work on the northern section is expected to begin in 2026, with no confirmed end date. The park remains accessible, but the northern area is currently fenced off.

Gröna Lund

Theme park expansion (autumn 2025–2028)

Gröna Lund Amusement Park
The amusement park Gröna Lund is expanding by rebuilding the bordering parking space into an extension of the park. The amusement park will be open as usual during the whole construction time.

Gröna Lund on Djurgården is adding the Skeppsholmsviken area, extending the park along the water with a promenade and new rides and venues. The design nods to the park’s historic look.

Gröna Lund stays open while work is underway.

Slussen

Construction and renovation of a transport hub (2020–2028)

Bird's eye view of Stockholm district Slussen.
The area Slussen on Södermalm is undergoing a huge reconstruction. There are 6 new restaurants here, in different price ranges and the layout of the area will be significantly more modern once completed.

Stockholm is rebuilding Slussen, bringing a new street layout and improved links between metro, buses, and trains. This will make it easier to change between different means of transportation. The hub sits between Södermalm and Gamla Stan and functions as both a station and a busy public space.

Plans include new restaurants and better routes between Södermalm and Gamla Stan. Travel remains possible during construction, but work sites are common and bus stops may move, adding short walks.

Sturegallerian

Renovation of a shopping mall (summer 2022–winter 2027)

Sturegallerian exterior during the construction.
Sturegallerian is being reconstructed but is still open during the build phase.

Sturegallerian is being refurbished inside and out. It’s an upscale shopping mall. The project restores the exterior to its late 1800s appearance, expands dining and retail space, and creates a direct link to the metro entrance.

The mall stays open throughout the renovation. Around the site, expect construction fencing, temporary routes, and some entrances to be closed at times.

Vaxholm quay

Quay renovation (2024–spring 2028)

The Vaxholm quay is partially open during the reconstruction, which is done in stages.

Vaxholm is refurbishing its 1969 quay to extend its lifespan. The town has roots in the 1600s, and the quay has been updated many times. Construction happens in sections, so parts will close at times. Ferries and boats still run to Vaxholm throughout the project. The project has been temporarily paused as of summer 2026, and the quay will remain open for the autumn of 2026. More information about the reconstruction can be found on Vaxholm city’s webpage.

Västerbron

Renovation of a bridge connecting Södermalm and Kungsholmen (2025–2028)

Västerbron, the 1935 arch bridge linking Södermalm and Kungsholmen, is being refurbished to extend its lifespan. Traffic stays open, with periodic lane closures and potentially slower speeds. More details about the renovation of Västerbron on Stockholm City’s webpage.

Long-term background projects

Arlanda Airport Hotel

Construction of a new airport hotel (2027–2029)

A new hotel at Stockholm Arlanda Airport is planned as part of Airport City Stockholm, the long-term development of the airport area.

Hagastaden

Construction of a new district (autumn 2010–2030)

Hagastaden is a new district in northern Stockholm that links Vasastan with Solna. Plans include restaurants, entertainment venues, and a biotech research campus. Sections will open gradually as streets and buildings are finished.

The Stockholm Bypass Project (Förbifart Stockholm)

New road and tunnel for car and bus traffic (2014–2030)

The Stockholm Bypass is a major road tunnel linking southern and northern Stockholm outside the inner city. It is designed to reduce through-traffic in central areas and cut travel times for car and bus journeys. Existing routes stay open during construction.

Stockholm metro expansion (Tunnelbanan)

New metro lines and stations (2017–2035)

Stockholm is building two metro lines and 11 stations, opening gradually from 2027 to 2030. The expansion improves travel across the city and brings service to neighborhoods without nearby stations.

Service continues during construction. Expect visible work around the city, including upgrades at some existing stations to create new transfer points.

Slakthusområdet

Construction of a new district (autumn 2024–2033)

Slakthusområdet in Stockholm is being redeveloped from an industrial area into a mixed district of homes, restaurants, and entertainment venues. The project includes a new metro station. Parts of the area are already active, with restaurants open, an urban sauna and nightclubs running.

Södra Värtahamnen

New waterfront district (2022–2030)

Södra Värtahamnen is turning a working port into a mixed waterfront neighborhood in northeastern Stockholm. Homes, parks, and commercial spaces will be added in stages.

Ferry traffic continues during the project. Tallink Silja Line remains the primary operator, serving routes to Finland and Estonia.
