Things to see and do in Skeppsholmen
Moderna Museet is one of Europe’s leading modern art museums, with a permanent collection that includes works by Picasso, Dalí, Matisse, and a strong representation of Swedish contemporary artists.
ArkDes — the Swedish Centre for Architecture and Design — shares the same island and building complex as Moderna Museet. Its permanent exhibition traces Swedish architecture from the 17th century to today, and the archive holds drawings, models, and photographs. Often overlooked by visitors, it rewards the curious.
af Chapman, the tall-masted sailing ship moored at the island’s western tip, is one of Stockholm’s most recognisable landmarks. It now serves as a youth hostel and can be admired from the bridge connecting Skeppsholmen to Blasieholmen.
Restaurants in Skeppsholmen
Skeppsholmen has almost no restaurants or cafés of its own — the Moderna Museet café is the main option.
The island itself is worth exploring on foot. Skeppsholmen was a Swedish naval base for over 300 years, and the low yellow buildings, cobbled paths, and open water views on all sides give it a calm, almost secluded feel — hard to believe you’re a five-minute walk from the city centre.
Getting to Skeppsholmen
From T-Centralen, take the blue metro line to Kungsträdgården (one stop) or walk from the city centre in around 15 minutes via Norrbro and Blasieholmen. Bus 65 stops directly on the island.
