10 Great Activities for a Rainy Day in Stockholm

A rainy day in Stockholm might seem like a setback, especially during a vacation. However, the city is brimming with indoor activities that make such days worth looking forward to. Here’s some ideas on what to do in Stockholm on those days when you’d rather stay indoors.

1. Go to the Cinema

Don’t worry if you don’t speak Swedish, in Sweden movies are traditionally not dubbed. Instead of dubbing, films are subtitled, which means that if you’re watching an English-speaking movie, you’ll hear the original dialogues, with Swedish subtitles at the bottom of the movie screen. This is great news for non-Swedish speaking visitors, as they can comfortably watch and understand all English speaking movies without any language barriers.

Note that for some movies – primarily those catered to a younger audience – Stockholm cinemas often offer both dubbed and subtitled versions. Typically, an earlier screening during the day features the dubbed version in Swedish, while a later screening will use the original language accompanied by Swedish subtitles.

A few popular cinema halls in Stockholm:

Filmstaden Sergel
This is one of Stockholm’s largest cinemas. It’s located in the heart of the city, at the square Hötorget (Haymarket).

Filmstaden Scandinavia
This is a great option for rainy days since this cinema is located inside of the mall: Mall of Scandinavia. Mall of Scandinavia is a big mall with lots of restaurants and stores to explore. The mall itself is located in the area Solna, in Stockholm.

Bio Rio
Newly rejuvenated yet embracing its 1943 heritage, Bio Rio offers a blend of classic and contemporary. Beyond films, it’s a gastronomic delight with an open-fire kitchen and a laid-back luxurious ambiance, drawing inspiration from LA’s premium theaters and Europe’s vintage cinemas. An ideal spot for a rainy day, where cinema becomes a social gathering.

Capitol
Located in Vasastan, this art deco-themed cinema, originally from the 1920s, offers a sophisticated movie experience. Besides showcasing a mix of classic and modern films, guests can savor small dishes and wine within its intimate bistro setting.
