Major renovations and constructions in Stockholm

Stockholm is constantly evolving. This guide covers major renovations and construction in Stockholm during your visit, so you can plan ahead.

Many buildings and key infrastructure need periodic upgrades, and the city’s fast-growing population means new projects are underway. Use this page to stay aware of current works and possible impacts on your plans.

Hagastaden

Construction of a new district (autumn 2010–2030)

Hagastaden is a new district in northern Stockholm that links Vasastan with Solna. Plans include restaurants, entertainment venues, and a biotech research campus. Sections will open gradually as streets and buildings are finished.

The Stockholm bypass Project (Förbifart Stockholm)

New road and tunnel for car and bus traffic (2014–2030)

The Stockholm Bypass is a major road tunnel linking southern and northern Stockholm outside the inner city. It is designed to reduce through-traffic in central areas and cut travel times for car and bus journeys. Existing routes stay open during construction.

Stockholm metro expansion (Tunnelbanan)

New metro lines and stations (2017–2030)

Stockholm is building two metro lines and 11 stations, opening gradually from 2027 to 2030. The expansion improves travel across the city and brings service to neighborhoods without nearby stations.

Service continues during construction. Expect visible work around the city, including upgrades at some existing stations to create new transfer points.

Slussen

Construction and renovation of a transport hub (2020–2028)

Stockholm is rebuilding Slussen, bringing a new street layout and improved links between metro, buses, and trains. This will make it easier to change between different means of transportation. The hub sits between Södermalm and Gamla Stan and functions as both a station and a busy public space.

Plans include new restaurants and better routes between Södermalm and Gamla Stan. Travel remains possible during construction, but work sites are common and bus stops may move, adding short walks.

Södra Värtahamnen

New waterfront district (2022–2030)

Södra Värtahamnen is turning a working port into a mixed waterfront neighborhood in northeastern Stockholm. Homes, parks, and commercial spaces will be added in stages.

Ferry traffic continues during the project. Tallink Silja Line remains the primary operator, serving routes to Finland and Estonia.

Sturegallerian

Renovation of a shopping mall (summer 2022–winter 2026)

Sturegallerian, a historic upscale mall, is being refurbished inside and out. The project restores the exterior to its late 1800s appearance, expands dining and retail space, and creates a direct link to the metro entrance.

The mall stays open throughout the renovation. Around the site, expect construction fencing, temporary routes, and some entrances to be closed at times.

Tegelbacken

Construction of central streets and a park (autumn 2024–autumn 2026)

Tegelbacken sits in front of the Sheraton Stockholm Hotel and connects Norrmalm with Gamla Stan and the route to Stockholm City Hall. The city is redesigning the junction to improve safety and flow. The project adds clearer crossings, smoother traffic patterns, and a new square by the water.

The area remains open to walking and driving, but expect closed lanes and slower traffic at times.

Söderhallarna

Food hall closed for renovation (spring 2024–winter 2026)

The food hall Söderhallarna, at Medborgarplatsen, is closed for a full upgrade. The project modernizes the venue and adds a food hall with restaurants and bars, plus an adjacent cinema, planned to reopen in 2026.

Slakthusområdet

Construction of a new district (autumn 2024–2033)

Slakthusområdet in Stockholm is being redeveloped from an industrial area into a mixed district of homes, restaurants, and entertainment venues. The project includes a new metro station. Parts of the area are already active, with restaurants open, an urban sauna and nightclubs running.

Sheraton Stockholm Hotel

Renovation of a central hotel (spring 2025–spring 2026)

Sheraton Stockholm in the city center is being refurbished. The hotel stays open throughout the renovation, with rooms available to book. Once finished the hotel will have rooms upgraded to a modern standard, and an expanded lobby with room for social gatherings, as well as an expanded gym.

Gröna Lund

Theme park expansion (autumn 2025–2028)

Gröna Lund on Djurgården is adding the Skeppsholmsviken area, extending the park along the water with a promenade and new rides and venues. The design nods to the park’s historic look.

Gröna Lund stays open while work is underway.

Götgatsbacken

Construction (autumn 2025–spring 2026)

Götgatsbacken, the Götgatan segment between Medborgarplatsen and Slussen, is a high-footfall area. The city will divert bicycle traffic around this stretch to free up more space for pedestrians.

Walking and cycling remain possible during the works.

Arlanda Airport Hotel

Construction of a new airport hotel (2027–2029)

A new hotel at Stockholm Arlanda Airport is planned as part of Airport City Stockholm, the long-term development of the airport area.

Museum of Far Eastern Antiquities (Östasiatiska museet)

Closed for renovation (spring 2024–autumn 2026)

The museum is closed for renovation and is scheduled to reopen in autumn 2026.

Stockholm City Library (Stockholms stadsbibliotek)

City library is closed for renovation (summer 2024–winter 2027)

The landmark library at Odenplan is closed for a full renovation. The project upgrades building systems to modern standards and restores the facade to its original look. The renovated exterior will have a neutral color than the currently orange building. Reopening is planned for winter 2027.

Vaxholm quay

Quay renovation (2024–spring 2028)

Vaxholm is refurbishing its 1969 quay to extend its lifespan. The town has roots in the 1600s, and the quay has been updated many times. Construction happens in sections, so parts will close at times. Ferries and boats still run to Vaxholm throughout the project.

Biblioteksgatan

Construction and remodelling of a central shopping street (autumn 2025–spring 2026)

The central shipping street Biblioteksgatan is being converted to a pedestrian-focused street. Vehicle access on cross streets will be limited to prioritize people walking.

The street stays open during the works. Expect construction areas and occasional detours.

Stockholm Concert Hall (Konserthuset)

Exterior renovation of the concert hall (spring 2025–spring 2026)

Ahead of its 100th anniversary in 2026, the hall is restoring its facade to the original sky-blue shade. The venue stays open, with events continuing during the works.

Västerbron

Renovation of a bridge connecting Södermalm and Kungsholmen (2025–2028)

Västerbron, the 1935 arch bridge linking Södermalm and Kungsholmen, is being refurbished to extend its lifespan. Traffic stays open, with periodic lane closures and potentially slower speeds.

The Royal Opera (Kungliga Operan)

Renovation of the Royal Opera House (2026–2031)

Stockholm’s Royal Opera will undergo a full renovation. Performances will relocate to a new venue in Norra Djurgårdsstaden for the duration of the project.

Fatbursparken

Park redesign (planned to start in 2026)

Stockholm plans to redesign Fatbursparken in Södermalm. Work on the northern section is expected to begin in 2026, with no confirmed end date. The park remains accessible, but the northern area is currently fenced off.
