If you like pastries, Stockholm will keep you busy. You’ll find classic Swedish favorites alongside modern cakes and excellent bread, easy to fit into a day of sightseeing.
Stockholm has so many excellent places, that limiting our choices for this list was not easy. To keep things simple, we’ve picked 12 favorites. This is not a complete list, it’s a shortlist of places worth seeking out.
If you’re looking for a treat or something sweet for a fika (a Swedish coffee break, often with a pastry), we recommend starting here.
Skeppsbro Bageri
Organic stone-milled sourdough in Gamla Stan
Skeppsbro Bageri is a fully organic bakery with a strong focus on traditional craft. The space smells of fresh-milled flour and fermented dough. Their kanelbullar have a deep golden-brown glaze and soft, pull-apart layers with cinnamon that tastes warm rather than sharp.
It’s also a great stop for visitors: you’re right by the water in Gamla Stan, so it’s easy to combine with a walk through the Old Town.
Address: Tullhus 1, Skeppsbron 21 (Gamla stan)
Valhallabageriet
Neighborhood favorite for classic Swedish buns and bread
Valhallabageriet is a classic neighborhood bakery known for two things: proper sourdough bread and some of the city’s best cinnamon and cardamom buns (kanelbullar and kardemummabullar). It’s the kind of place locals pop into for everyday bread, but it’s also a great “Stockholm bakery” stop if you want to try the classics done really well.
They have more than one central location, so it’s easy to fit into a day of sightseeing in Östermalm or Vasastan.
Address: Valhallavägen 174 (Östermalm), Odengatan 19 (Vasastan), Östermalmsgatan 92 (Östermalm)
Tössebageriet
Old-school Stockholm konditori since 1920
Tössebageriet is a classic Stockholm konditori that’s been on the same address since 1920.
Inside, it has that traditional café feel and a huge selection of cakes, pastries, and buns—plus seasonal favorites when they’re in season.
If you visit on a sunny day, try to get a seat outside on Karlavägen. It’s an especially nice spot for a slow breakfast or fika in good weather.
Address: Karlavägen 77 (Östermalm)
Lillebrors bageri
Tiny Vasastan bakery with legendary semlor
Lillebrors is small, simple, and all about the baking. They’re especially known for sourdough bread, rich bullar, and some of Stockholm’s most loved semlor (available during semla season, which usually starts mid-January and peaks early or mid-February).
The shop is tiny and it’s common to see a queue, but it usually moves fast. Knowing everything is fresh from the oven that morning makes the queue worth the while.. In Vasastan, this is where you’ll find bread warm from the oven and buns glazed minutes before you buy them.
Address: Rörstrandsgatan 10 (Vasastan)
Bullar & bröd
Generously filled cinnamon and cardamom buns
If buns (bullar) are your priority, Bullar & Bröd is a great choice. They’re known for generously filled cinnamon and cardamom buns: soft, buttery, and often glazed – as well as solid sourdough bread.
With multiple locations in the inner city (including in Östermalm and Vasastan), it’s easy to drop by when you’re nearby rather than planning your whole day around it.
Address: Valhallavägen 65 (Östermalm)
Svedjan bageri
Northern Swedish tradition meets specialty coffee
Svedjan started as a family bakery on a farm in Västerbotten, northern Sweden, and their Stockholm café brings that northern baking tradition to Södermalm. What sets them apart is their use of ecological flour from Warbro Kvarn, a mill in northern Sweden that stone-grinds their own flour.
Their sourdough bread (surdegsbröd) has earned a following for its crust and taste of traditional Swedish recipes. This is one of the places locals travel from the other side of the town to get their bread.
The coffee deserves attention too. This is one of the few Stockholm bakeries where the coffee program matches the quality of the baking. Their coffee beans are from the Swedish coffee roasters Koppi, with a light roasted coffee that brings out the natural flavors of the beans.
Address: Brännkyrkagatan 93 (Södermalm)
Green Rabbit
Organic rye bread and rare Swedish grains
Green Rabbit is a small bakery with a clear focus: rye bread. They bake organic rye bread daily and also work with rare Swedish grains, exploring new ways to use them and help keep these varieties alive.
It’s also an easy place to stop for more than just fika. Besides bread and baked goods, they serve breakfast, soup of the day, and Swedish takes on Danish-style smørrebrød; great for a light lunch.
You’ll find it on Tegnérgatan, close to Rådmansgatan metro, very convenient if you’re exploring central Stockholm.
Address: Tegnérgatan 17 (Norrmalm)
Stora bageriet
Historic military bakery by the Royal Stables
Stora Bageriet is located on Sibyllegatan, a quiet street that feels removed from central Stockholm despite being just minutes from the more touristy areas. The bakery occupies one of the city’s oldest industrial buildings. The building was previously occupied by Kronobageriet, which baked bread for Swedish soldiers for centuries from the 1640 and into the 1950s. The building now also houses the Museum of Performing Arts (Scenkonstmuseet), and the Royal Stables (Hovstallet) stand right next door, you can in fact see the stabled building from the bakery.
The location makes this an easy add-on if you’re visiting the Royal Stables or exploring the quieter streets of Östermalm. It’s an easy stop for breakfast, fika, or a simple lunch, and the Östermalm location is especially nice if you want to sit down for a moment (they also have a second spot in Vasastan).
Address: Sibyllegatan 2 (Östermalm), Sankt Eriksgatan 88 (Vasastan)
Bergstrands bageri
Artisan archipelago baking with seasonal selection
Bergstrands is a small artisan bakery that focuses on doing things properly: bread, buns, cakes, and pastries made from scratch, with a clear love for classic Swedish baking. Much of the selection changes with the season, so there’s usually always something new on display.
It started on the island Utö in the Stockholm archipelago, and the city bakery keeps that warm, personal feel. Perfect for a relaxed fika stop when you’re exploring Vasastan.
Address: Frejgatan 46a (Vasastan)
Vete-katten
Traditional konditori since 1928
Vete-Katten is a classic Stockholm konditori, the kind of place people picture when they think of Swedish fika. It was founded in 1928, and the original café on Kungsgatan 55 still feels wonderfully old-fashioned, with several cozy rooms that make you want to linger.
Come here when you want the full “konditori” experience: a big selection of traditional cakes, pastries, and buns, plus coffee (and tea) in a timeless setting right in the city center.
Address: Kungsgatan 55 (Norrmalm), Götgatan 81 (Södermalm)
Gunnarsons specialkonditori
Old-school café with vast pastry selection since 1946
Gunnarsons is a classic, old-school konditori (a traditional Swedish pastry café) with a huge selection of cakes, pastries, and buns; great when you want plenty of choice (and the “traditional Stockholm café” feeling). They’ve been here since 1946, and the shop is still very much a local favorite.
It’s easy to find, located on Götgatan 92, right by Skanstull metro. There’s seating on two floors, so it often works well even when other cafés are packed.
Nice bonus: they usually have vegan options too, often including a vegan semla during semla season.
Address: Götgatan 92 (Södermalm)
Fosch Artisan Pâtisserie
French-style elegance with organic Swedish ingredients
Fosch is the place to go if you’re craving refined, French-style pastries in Stockholm. Think elegant cakes, croissants, macarons, and other pâtisserie classics that look as good as they taste.
They put a lot of care into ingredients, with a strong focus on organic/ecological produce, and they even grow some ingredients themselves when in season.
It’s also more than a “just desserts” stop: depending on the branch, you can get breakfast, salads, soups, and even brunch-style dishes, so it works well as a light lunch too.
Where to go: Their original café is on Löjtnantsgatan (Östermalm), and they also have a branch on Birger Jarlsgatan (Norrmalm).
Address: Löjtnantsgatan 8 (Östermalm), Birger Jarlsgatan 63 (Norrmalm)
MR Cake
Pastry chef Roy Fares’ colorful American-inspired creations
MR Cake is a modern café and konditori created by pastry chef Roy Fares, with a fun, American-inspired style that stands out in Stockholm’s fika scene. Expect big, colorful cakes and cheesecakes, plus buns and pastries, often with a little extra richness and creativity.
It’s also a good stop outside of fika hours: they serve breakfast and light lunch items like American pancakes, Eggs Benedict, salads, and sandwiches.
Where to go: The main café is at Rådmansgatan 12, and they also have a second Stockholm location at Regeringsgatan 57.
Address: Rådmansgatan 12 (Östermalm), Regeringsgatan 57 (Norrmalm)
