Eating at a sit-down restaurant in Stockholm in general is on the higher end compared to other European cities, though cheaper than both Oslo (Norway) and Copenhagen (Denmark). There are however ways of lowering the cost and still enjoy eating at restaurants. Here are some tips for dining on a budget:
- Street food and markets
Explore the city’s street food scene or visit markets like Hötorgshallen for affordable meals. For a quintessential Swedish experience, try the fried herring at Strömmingsvagnen at Slussen (Google maps). - Budget restaurants and cafés
Many restaurants offer “Dagens lunch”, a lunch special that typically includes a main dish, salad, and water at a reasonable price. Look for local favorites like La Neta that serves Mexican street food or Chutney, a vegetarian restaurant in the Södermalm district. - Self-catering
If you have access to a kitchen, consider buying groceries from budget grocery stores like Willys or Lidl and preparing some meals yourself to save on dining costs. Some museums (for example the Vasa museum, Nordic Museum or Museum of Economics), have areas designated for bringing your own food. If the weather allows, a picnic in a park can also be a nice experience.
