Guide to traveling by taxi in Stockholm

Stockholm has several taxi operators, including a few major companies that are widely used. While the city is highly walkable and boasts an efficient public transport system, there are times when taking a taxi is the more convenient option, whether due to time constraints, luggage, or late-night travel.

Types of taxi services

There are four major taxi companies in Stockholm:

These companies are reliable and provide consistent service. While several other taxi companies operate in the city, pricing and service quality can vary. For a more predictable experience, choose one of the major four, or alternatively, use Uber or Bolt.

How to find and book a taxi

To book a traditional taxi, you can use the taxi company’s app or call them directly. You’ll also find taxi stands located throughout the city. If you’re hailing a taxi on the street, make sure to choose one from the major companies, as some smaller operators use similar-looking logos and may charge significantly higher prices.

For Uber and Bolt, the most convenient option is to book through their respective apps.

Understanding taxi fares

Taxi prices in Stockholm are not regulated, meaning each company can set their own rates. To help customers understand costs, taxis display a fare sticker, usually on one of the side windows. However, these stickers can be confusing if you’re unfamiliar with what to look for. The sticker includes a table showing prices for a 10 km ride lasting 15 minutes, with variations for weekday daytime, evening, and holiday rates. The second column, displayed in large print, highlights the highest price among the options. This “comparison price” is designed to give you a sense of the cost for that specific taxi.

If the comparison price exceeds 600 SEK, it’s best to choose another taxi. There are many affordable alternatives, and paying more than 600 SEK for a 10 km ride is significantly above the usual rate in Stockholm.

As of December 2024, here are the comparison prices for a 10 km, 15 minute ride from the four major taxi companies in Stockholm (for a standard 4-person taxi):

  • Taxi Stockholm: 419 SEK
  • Sverigetaxi: 585 SEK
  • Taxi Kurir: 585 SEK
  • Topcab: 585 SEK

If you need a larger taxi or additional services, such as a toddler car seat or traveling with pets, expect additional charges.

Cash payments are uncommon in Stockholm, and most taxis require payment via their app or a credit card if paying directly in the taxi.

Tips for choosing a taxi

The safest way to get a taxi in Stockholm is by using a mobile app or choosing a taxi from a designated stand outside train stations and airports. Hailing a taxi via their mobile app guarantees that you know which taxi company you are going with. The designated taxi stands outside the train stations and airports only allow registered taxis, so you can trust that you’re selecting a reliable service.

When choosing a taxi, look for licensed vehicles with yellow license plates. Opt for one of the four major taxi companies, Uber or Bolt. It’s best to avoid unlicensed taxis to ensure fair pricing and a safe experience.

Airport taxis

The safest and most reliable way to travel to and from Stockholm’s airports by taxi is to choose a flat fee. All major taxi companies offer a flat-rate pricing for trips between Arlanda Airport and central Stockholm. The fees are similar for the main taxi companies, and should be around 750 SEK to and from central Stockholm. If you’re traveling to or from areas farther from the city center, such as outside the central station, the price may be slightly higher.

As of December 2024, the fixed rates for trips to and from Arlanda Airport with the four major taxi companies are:

  • Taxi Stockholm: 745 SEK
  • Sverigetaxi: 750 SEK
  • Taxi Kurir: 750 SEK
  • Topcab: 750 SEK

Tips for a smooth taxi ride

To avoid overpriced fares, always ask for an estimated price before starting your ride.

For trips longer than 10 km (6 miles), it’s a good idea to request a fixed fare. While the fixed rate may sometimes be slightly higher than using the taxi meter, it helps you control the cost and avoid any surprises upon reaching your destination..

Most taxi drivers in Stockholm speak English, so language should not be a barrier if you communicate in English.
