You’ll find Artipelag about 25 km (15 miles) east of Stockholm city center, in a beautiful part of Stockholm’s archipelago on the island Värmdö. Artipelag is an art museum and gallery with a surface area covering an impressive 10,000 square meters (107,600 square feet), and showcases both contemporary and classical art. The site includes a large outdoor area with a coastal promenade and a few outdoor art installations.
Whether or not you’re a dedicated art lover, you’ll be captivated by the impressive and extensive exhibition spaces. The art museum’s size and the grandeur of its displays offer an experience that would be challenging to replicate in the city center. It’s evident that the location was carefully chosen to enhance the visitor experience starting from the very moment you arrive. Even walking from the parking area to the main building through the forest path, gave us the mundane and somewhat nostalgic peaceful feeling of walking through a Swedish forest. Which, by the way, of course is exactly what it was: a calm forest walk. In a way it’s brilliant because it establishes the tone and atmosphere as a precursor to visit.
Exhibitions and Facilities
Artipelag features two main exhibition halls, each offering a different experience. Tickets can be purchased separately for each hall or combined if you’d like to visit both. You can take a walk along the coastal promenade for free.
One of the exhibition halls is a traditional gallery. The space has large open areas with a few temperature-controlled rooms, with large sliding doors to maintain the right conditions for preserving older, more delicate works of art.
The second exhibition hall is called The Artbox, this is a versatile 1,200 square meters (12,900 square feet) room that hosts a variety of events such as conferences, product launches, trade shows, concerts, galas, and TV and film recordings. In 2024, it featured an immersive art installation showcasing art by Van Gogh, combining visual art projected on walls, floors, and screens, with classical music, in order to create a unique sensory experience.
The architecture of Artipelag is modern and minimalistic, reminiscent of Yasuragi with its combination of natural wood and raw concrete material, with an earth-tone color palette. The design is Scandinavian, emphasizes simplicity and harmony with local natural elements such as birch wood.
Dining Options and additional things to do
There’s both a restaurant and a café. The restaurant is open on select days, while the café is a popular spot, especially during warm summer days when visitors can enjoy the extensive outdoor seating areas.
Artipelag beautifully incorporates elements of Stockholm and Sweden. The simplicity and closeness to nature are evident throughout the site, surrounded by water and the archipelago, which is a significant part of Stockholm’s charm. The rooftop beehives produce honey sold in the museum shop, and the clean, minimalist design enhances the overall peaceful and serene atmosphere. You can also enjoy a swim at the nearby beach or a walk along the coastal promenade with a view over the water.
Getting Here
The art museum is easily accessible from Stockholm. By car, it takes about 25 minutes from the Central Station, located in the city center. You can also use the public transportation, a combination of metro and bus, which takes around 50 minutes from T-Centralen. Alternatively, you can get here by boat with the shipping company Strömma, offering a route through Stockholm’s archipelago.
