The Stockholm City Museum (Stadsmuseet) gives a glimpse into Stockholm’s history, culture, and urban development, and is one of the few Stockholm museums with free admission. It has several exhibitions covering various aspects of Stockholm’s history, from medieval times to the present day. You will discover how Stockholm’s architecture has evolved and transformed its urban landscape.
It’s located in Södermalm, right at the metro station Slussen next to the square Södermalmstorg. The building, designed by architect Ferdinand Boberg, showcases a blend of early 20th-century architecture with distinctive Art Nouveau and Neo-Renaissance elements. Originally, it was the site of the old Södermalm Parish House (“Södermalms Församlingshus”), reflecting its long-standing role in the community. Before becoming the City Museum, it also served as an orthodox church, a school building, and a theater. The facade features ornate detailing and decorative elements typical of Boberg’s design, making the building itself an architectural attraction.
One of the most interesting parts of the museum is to discover how people lived in Stockholm through various periods, including displays on daily life, fashion, and domestic objects from different eras. It has a large collection of items such as artwork, household objects, and personal belongings that provide insight into the city’s cultural and social history. Despite offering free admission, it rivals other paid museums in quality and is well worth a visit. We believe you won’t be disappointed.
