The art gallery is renowned for its exhibitions of contemporary art, featuring works by both Swedish and international artists. The exhibitions cover a wide range of media, including painting, sculpture, photography, and installation art. The art gallery was established in 1916 and is one of the most respected and oldest venues for contemporary art in Sweden.
One of the highlights of the Liljevalchs calendar is the annual Spring Salon, a juried exhibition open to all artists. This exhibition is a popular event that showcases a diverse array of artworks, providing a platform for emerging and established artists alike.
In addition to its regular program, the art gallery often hosts themed exhibitions that explore particular movements, genres, or societal issues, offering visitors a chance to engage with art in a broader cultural and historical context.
In 2021, Liljevalchs made a significant expansion of its main building by including the addition of a new wing named Liljevalchs+. The new wing (designed by architect Gert Wingårdh) has three floors and expands the main building with 2,400 square meters (25,833 square feet) additional exhibition space.
