The Swedish History Museum

The exhibitions in the Swedish History Museum (Historiska museet) starts off in prehistoric times, and continues chronologically into modern time. They tell the story of how Sweden became a country throughout history, with many original items from the Vikings period, medieval period and later.

The museum has a popular Vikings exhibition, with more than 2,500 original objects from the viking period. The period of the vikings started in the 8th century and continued for 350 years.  The exhibition showcases Viking artifacts such as weapons, jewelry, tools, and coins.  It also shows the daily life, trade, warfare, and beliefs of the Vikings.

The museum has a room filled with golden artifacts. The gold room has 3,000 objects in gold and silver on display. Objects such as silver pendants from the Viking Age, gold collars from the migration period and golden reliquaries from the middle ages.

During a period between the 11th century and throughout the 16th century Sweden was a catholic country, until the country became Lutheran Protestant as of today. The museum has a whole exhibition from these medieval times, focusing on Catholic objects and medieval art.

The museum shares the building with the Economy Museum and you can visit both of the museums with the same entry ticket.
